Nestled in the rich farm lands and pine forests of south Alabama, Atmore is a growing community proud of its past and excited about its future. Founded in 1866, the community was first called Williams Station, just a supply stop along the Mobile and Great Northern railroad. Each October Atmore revisits the past to celebrate not only our railroad heritage, but also the cultural diversity of the community which includes both Creek Indian and Mennonite communities.

Based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Census 2000, Atmore's population is close to 8,000 within the city limits. However, a much larger population of over 100,000 live within a 30 mile radius and trade with local retail and service businesses.

A pleasant climate combined with numerous annual events and excellent city recreational facilities which include tennis courts and swimming pools provide a variety of activities. The Atmore Country Club offers members and their guests a beautiful nine hole course to play and enjoy.
