Opp, Alabama

In 1901, a small community in south Alabama showed their appreciation to a man who was almost directly responsible for the town's existence. The man, Henry Opp , (of German Descent), was a lawyer for the L & N Railroad, He lived and practiced law in Andalusia, AL in the late 1800's and early 1900's; he was Mayor of Andalusia from 1899 to 1906.

Central of Georgia was trying to prevent the L & N Railroad from surveying a right-of-way into Covington County. Mr. Opp was apparently a good lawyer and he won his case, enabling the railroad to complete the survey and ultimately establish the railroad line which now passes through the city of Opp, The railroad split, with one arm traveling south and the other continuing east.

Because this provided a good "turning around" place for trains, and because it was already inhabited to a small degree, a little town was laid out on the site with the encouragement of the railroad.

In appreciation to Mr. Henry Opp for being directly responsible for the railroad's existence through the area, the L & N encouraged the people to name the town after Mr. Opp, and so it was.
Opp has a population of some 7000 people, located on Highway 331, 20 miles from the Florida state line, and on a direct route from Montgomery to the Florida beaches. There as a new State Part just north of the city with an 1100 acre lake for fantastic fishing & boating, and land around the area provides a paradise for hunters. We believe in our town's slogan, "THE CITY OF OPPORTUNITY" for GOOD LIVING AND GOOD PLAYING.
