Etowah County, Alabama lies in the lower region of the Appalachians, incorporating the southern terminus of Lookout Mountain and the scenic parkway bearing its name. Gadsden, The County Seat, was developed along the Coosa River which flows through the heart of Etowah touching the soil and soul of communities like Hokes Bluff, Turkeytown, Glencoe, Whorton's Bend, Rainbow City and Southside along its journey southward. To the southwest, the territory was once the domain of the powerful Creek Indians and to the northeast, the mighty Cherokee settled Turkeytown and established there the Capital of the Cherokee Nation. The boundary line between these Indian Nations has been permanently preserved by the Original Survey of the Public Lands of the United States and serves for reference and orientation in these modern times. Etowah, a word taken from the Cherokee, depicts a strong tree bearing good fruit. The county was carved from her sister counties of Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, DeKalb, Marshall and St. Clair and serves as the regions hub of tourism, culture and economic activity. The picturesque chapters of Etowah's early history are scenes of the nation's progress, and symbols of the nation's pain, her deeds of great honor and acts of great shame; with sights of growth and sounds of change; of dying Cherokees on the Trail of Tears, of rebel yells and funeral marches, of railroad whistles and street car bells, and of the churning waters of the paddle wheelers that brought commerce and excitement to the banks of the Coosa. Today, Etowah is a thriving County of a hundred thousand hospitable people with their 12 incorporated municipalities, and several residential and farming communities all working together to keep the "Etowah Experience" a way of life for ourselves and our visitors.
