Discover the best of what College has to offer. Our small-town hospitality and pioneer spirit are memorable. College is the hub for Alaska’s Interior and Arctic with first-class accommodations and restaurants, museums, some of Alaska’s top-rated visitor attractions, world-renowned concerts and performances, upscale galleries and specialty stores, historic sites, Alaska Native culture, and access to the Alaskan wilderness.

We can't make them appear with the flick of a switch, but we can provide one of the best spots on earth to see them. We are of course, referring to the Northern lights. Beautiful and mysterious curtains, the colors range from green to red to purple, with the brightest and most common color, a yellow-green. College sits under what is called the auroral oval, a ring-shaped region around the North Pole. Our location offers a great balance of occurrence, frequency and activity. Intensity varies from night to night, with the best viewing from late evening through the wee hours of the morning, late August to April.

Look no further to explore the great outdoors just minutes from town for a wide range of hiking trails for a casual stroll or a challenging hike. Explore a bit further and you can join the action with mountain biking, whitewater rafting, canoeing, kayaking, snowmobiling, dog mushing, skiing, camping, fishing, hunting and backpacking. Cast a line for the voracious Arctic grayling, a species nearly extinct today in the rest of the United States. Wildlife is one of Alaska’s greatest treasures with many species that inhabit the land, the lakes, rivers and endless sky.

No other place in Alaska blends the richness of its history with present day. Sports buffs can take in a full schedule of hockey or basketball games. They can tee off late one summer evening under the midnight sun or view a baseball game at 10:30 p.m. with no artificial lights.

Nature buffs can visit the local farmers market and the botanical gardens. Visitors can enjoy a wide selection of indigenous and contemporary art and music and an impressive selection of galleries and specialty stores. Fairbanks is the venue for local fine arts, a symphony orchestra, and world-renowned theatrical and musical performances year-round.

Most of the year, College enjoys sunny skies and well-defined seasons. Hot summer days are balanced by cool winter nights. The Brooks Range protects the Interior from Arctic winds while the Alaska Range keeps the wet, humid coastal weather at bay. We’ll let you in on a secret - the summers are wonderful and the winters are actually less intimidating than their reputation!

Collegeans love spring! Spring marks the return of the geese and swans, and the literal bursting of tree buds overnight! In summer, Collegeans are always doing something outside. The days are warm and long, the gardens are blooming, and our schedule is full of outdoor and community activities! During fall, College is awash with golden leaves and brilliant, crisp sunny days. Berry pickers can be found on most hillsides. This is a wonderful time for hiking, camping, hunting, and soaking in hot springs.

Come and be surprised and delighted by the hidden treasure of this land that is often referred to as the “Last Frontier”. One look will tell you why!
