Congress, a high desert town, is just 60 miles northwest of Phoenix in the northern reaches of the great southwest's Sonoran Desert. This area is noted for its clean air, good country living, western hospitality and all-around high quality of life. Winters are generally cool and dry, which leads to an annual population increase of 2,500 "snow birds" every autumn. Summers are hot, but it's a dry heat and locals enjoy the laid back atmosphere the warm weather brings with it. Congress and the nearby town of Wickenburg are renowned for its guest ("dude") ranches and tourism support businesses. Wickenburg is home to two nationally known behavioral health treatment facilities and several manufacturing plants. Annual events include Gold Rush Days, the Blue Grass Festival, the Desert Caballeros Ride and Fiesta Septiembre. Congress was actually two separate places. "Mill Town" closer to the mine, featured the mill, company offices, a hospital and residences. "Lower Town" was located farther south, with the commercial district, restaurants, stores and saloons, two churches and a school. Virtually nothing but debris remains at either site except two cemeteries as lasting testaments to man's presence. Congress is a part of Yavapai County, which was the largest single county ever created in the United States. Yavapai is an empire of its own. It is larger than the states of either Massachusetts or New Jersey or the combined areas of the states of Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Delaware. It ranges in altitude from 2,000 feet in the southwest to about 8,000 feet on the highest of the mountain ranges. The riches of Yavapai or its dense forest covered mountains, mines and quarries, picturesque valleys and rich grazing land. Congress offers a pleasant change of pace, and nearby Wickensburg offers a variety of housing, schooling and recreational activities. Most residents never leave this area, because there is so much do here! Come and check it out, you'll be glad you did.
