Arizona Real Estate & Relocation Guide

Whetstone, Arizona

Population: 2,354

Located in Cochise County

Whetstone is located about four miles due north of Huachuca City. Whetstone does have a post office, a fire house, a police station and a library, a gas station/mini mart - but if you're looking for a place to "get away from it all", then come to Whetstone!

This is a very rural area, where all the farmers know one another and look out for another. Homesteads have been in the families for generations, and there is not a lot of new construction going on out here. Daytime summer temperatures hover in the 105 region, dropping to a comfortable 75 at night. Winter days are sun-filled and pleasantly warm, approximately 60, but the desert makes the nights cold, and the temperatures can drop into the 30's.

For sheer beauty this area cannot be beat! From pink-tinged thunderstorm clouds in the spring, to azure cloudless skies the rest of the year, and russet-toned sunsets, Whetstone can whet your appetite for the natural things in life!

Just a few miles north of Whetstone is Kartchner Caverns State Park. This splendid, living cave is the best kept secret! It was discovered in 1974, but no one told the world until 1988! Still virtually pristine, this massive limestone cave has 13,000 feet of passages and two rooms as long as football fields. Finally opened as a state park November 12, 1999, this underground wilderness will remain protected while offering visitors a rare tour through multi-colored cave formations.

For something light-hearted and fun, come and check out Gammons Gulch, located north east of Whetstone, about 45 minutes away. Jay Gammon (son of John Gammon, John Wayne's body guard) purchased a ten-acre piece of property about 30 years ago. He is constantly gathering up old west type buildings and other artifacts and restoring these things and placing them on his property. It is now like an old western movie set with an old mine, blacksmith shop, saloon, dentist office, hotel and many other buildings. He provides the tour of the place and a very rich and colorful description of the way things were back then. He loves old automobiles and old engines of every type and has lots of them all around the place, too. Many of the artifacts were obtained by Jay from old cowboy movie sets.

Sierra Vista is the nearest town of any substance, and is Cochise County's largest city and home to an array of historical, commercial and natural experiences. The Mall at Sierra Vista features top national retailers and family- oriented activities. It also provides employment for those in Whetstone who are not farmers.

If you're looking for wide open spaces in order to build your dream home, then Whetstone can offer it to you. For as little as $12,000 you can buy a few acres. If you're looking for something more established, you can find yourself spending as little as $36,000 for a single wide mobile home, or over $300,000 for a ranch with plenty of land - it's your choice, and here it's all for the choosing!

When it comes to rugged, natural beauty, nothing can beat Whetstone! From its "high" clear, blue skies, to its beautiful climate, all year round, Whetstone is a nature lover's paradise!
