Once touted as a summer home for Chicago’s elite, Edgewater is a growing neighborhood for residents and businesses. Lined with condos, mid-rise homes and Loyola University-Chicago, this community is home to many Eastern Europeans, African-Americans, gays and lesbians.

Some of the housing is more affordable than other neighborhoods, making Edgewater attractive for many retired and mature residents, who are on fixed incomes. Over the past few years, the neighborhood conditions have improved, with people coming in and restoring many of the run-down buildings and homes. In Andersonville, you can find a variety of home styles including bungalows, stuccos and Victorians, some deemed as landmarks to prevent tear-downs.

Once home to mostly Swedish immigrants, Edgewater is now populated with a large number of gays, lesbians and many ethnic residents whose homelands have been troubled by civil war, including Ethiopians, Nigerians, Bosnians, Serbs and Croatians. Andersonville still reigns as a Swedish community, ripe with restaurants and shops owned by locals. Andersonville has experienced a surge of popularity; many young people and families have moved here and renovated many of the buildings.

The proximity to Lake Michigan and Wrigley Field make Edgewater a convenient place to live for those who enjoy the outdoor activities-a short walk can take you to a variety of locally-owned shops and businesses.
