The University of Illinois at Chicago has had a strong influence on the Near West Side, investing and reconstructing many of the area’s residencies and bringing businesses back to the area. All of the communities in the Near West Side are rich with culture, history and growth.

Most of the area consists of 19th century rowhouses, loft condominiums, newly constructed townhouses and two- and three-flats. The median home price is $300,000.

With a diverse mix of residents including Greek, Italian, African-America, Irish and Hispanic, much of the local shopping, cuisine and aesthetic influences are apparent around the neighborhood. Complete with such history as the birth-place of the ‘Chicago Blues’ and the famous Maxwell Street neighborhood, the Midwest's largest ‘port of entry’ for immigrants, both international and internal.

From Greektown to University Village, residents are able to watch a traditional parade or festival, enjoy a wide range of authentic ethnic restaurants and bakeries, browse a growing number of unique shops and boutiques or stop by the famous street market, Maxwell Street, complete with indoor/outdoor market stalls.
