Alamo, California

God's Country - that's the name Alamo goes by for those who live here. This beautiful piece of America is tucked deep inside the coastal range of the San Francisco Bay Area. A life-sized statue of a Palomino horse stands like a sentinel atop the Alamo Hay & Grain at the town's main intersection of Stone Valley Road and Danville Boulevard. Its open-air barn architecture holds a lot of interesting and anachronistic stuff. It still holds riding tack and horse liniment, animal traps and, hay and grain. But Its merchandise has changed as ranches have sold and subdivided into housing tracts, and today they sell more dog collars than ranch supplies. Like everything in this area of California, the house prices have risen steeply as California has become the Hi-tech Mecca for all people. A typical 3-bedroom, 2 bath home will sell for $650,000 and up. Condos and townhouses are a little less expensive, but properties are snapped up fast in this very desirable neighborhood. Alamo does not have many sit-down restaurants, although the town offers a wide range of different styles of cuisine from Japanese to Mexican, from Chinese to American and everything in between. For fine dining there are the adjacent towns of Walnut Creek and Danville, both just a short drive away, and both full of wonderful restaurants. However, if you want to eat the best waffles in town, you can do no better than finding a table at the Alamo Café. With all the changes, the BMWs and Volvos replacing the old station wagons, bicycles and even tractors, one thing has not changed: Alamo is definitely one of the best places to raise a family. The weather in Alamo is nearly perfect most of the time. Today it's the kind of place where the baseball diamonds are taken care of, you see your neighbors at the market, the oak trees are large and gnarled and the swimming pools are always crystal-clear, eighty-two degrees and blue. What could be better than a small-town feel to a place not far the metropolis?
