Population: 25,132 Located in San Mateo County

Belmont is a lovely suburban community with a population of approximately 25,000. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula, midway between San Francisco and San Jose. The name "Belmont" was drawn from two French phrases meaning "beautiful mountain" - an appropriate name for the tree-covered community. The hills reach an altitude of about 750 feet, from which Mt. Diablo and the San Francisco Bay can be seen.

This ideal location ensures temperate weather with uniform low humidity. Summer temperatures range on the average from 53 to 82 degrees, and winter temperatures from 38 to 59 degrees, with relative humidity in the mid 60's.

The Ralston home, an 80-room redwood mansion, became a landmark, and is now located on the campus of Notre Dame de Namur University. The show place Ralston Hall includes a mirrored ballroom reminiscent of the famed Versailles Hall of Mirrors. It is open for public tours and private events.

The Belmont/Redwood Shores School District is one of the top-ranked in the state. There are nine public and parochial schools covering grades K-8. Carlmont High School is part of the Sequoia Union High School District, the highest rated district in the county. Notre Dame de Namur University, a coeducational 4-year university, is located in the heart of Belmont. It is one of the oldest accredited universities in California, and offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees through day and evening classes.

Retail and service businesses form the core of the local economy but there is also some light industry. High-technology is a growing part of the economy, and Oracle's world headquarters sit on the border of Belmont and neighboring Redwood City. Shopping areas include the central business district, Belmont Plaza, Belmont Village Shopping Center, and Carlmont Village Shopping Center.

Belmont has fourteen recreational areas throughout the community, including extensive open space areas and trails. Twin Pines Park on Ralston Avenue is centrally located and provides pleasant picnicking facilities. The Belmont Sports Complex, which is adjacent to the Ralston/101 Interchange, includes various ball fields, picnic and play areas, seasonal concession stands and a recreation building that is used for community meetings, classes and special events.

Belmont is indeed a "beautiful mountain" and offers a refreshing change of pace for those who wish to escape all the hustle and bustle of other portions of California. Come and see what makes Belmont so beautiful!
