Hidden Valley Lake was part of the 21,200-acre Rancho Guenoc in the mid-1800s. One of the last Spanish land grants, the ranch extended to the small town of Guenoc on Putah Creek and east to encompass what would become the estate of the famous 19th-century actress Lillie Langtry. The gated residential community of Hidden Valley Lake was first developed in 1969. Today is includes a public 18-hole golf course and pro shop, tennis courts, a country club (private), restaurant and bar, stables, campground, and private man-made lake. At the southern edge of Hidden Valley Lake is the old Stone House museum. The original building, with a foundation of 12x12 hewn oak logs and walls of quarried stone, was built in 1854. In 1950 it was designated California Historical Landmark #450. The Stone House Historical Society members have refurbished and maintain the building; they are proud to show it to the public by appointment. Hovering in the air between Hidden Valley Lake and Middletown are gliders based at Crazy Creek Soaring, and in warm weather you can often see colorful hot-air balloons floating overhead, escaping the Napa Valley when fog-bound.
