In contrast to many of its neighbors, Los Altos has gone out of its way to limit commercial growth. This prestigious and quiet community prides itself in schools that score among the top 2% in California and features a village-like downtown shopping area. Bordering Los Altos on the west is the exclusive residential community of Los Altos Hills. Covering 10 square miles, this city has a 1-acre minimum for new construction. Los Altos Hills is also home to one of the county’s community colleges, Foothill College. The two communities have a combined population of 36,500.
