Lower Lake, California

First known to the European settlers as Grantsville, this community began in the late 1850s. Lower Lake was the south county community nearest a major boat landing during the years when most transportation was across Clear Lake by steamer. At a crossroads for traffic to and from Calistoga, the area also became a business center for sulphur, borax and quicksilver mine that brought prosperity to Grantsville/Lower Lake a century ago.

The town features some of the county's oldest buildings. The first jail, just big enough for two inmates, still interests passersby. It was built in 1875, and was first occupied the night it was finished - by its over-enthusiastic builders. The stone structure is designated California State Historical Landmark #429. Residents preserved and renovated the former grammar school, built in 1877, which now houses the Lower lake Historical Schoolhouse Museum, which has a stage upstairs used for local theater and events.

As home to over 1,700 residents, Lower Lake offers restaurants, a pub, a coffee house, a gallery, an antique store and other businesses on Main Street and on Highways 29 and 53. Schools and the area's cemetery are in Lower Lake. South of town is Ployéz Winery, maker of sparking wines. Anderson Marsh State Historical Park, located on Cache Creek just north of town, has significant archeological sites and hosts both the popular annual Blackberry Festival in August and the Heron Days Festival and concerts in April. John Grigsby built its historic ranch house in the 1850's; John Anderson bought it in 1885 to operate a dairy and raise beef cattle which were shipped to San Francisco.
