Mendocino was founded in 1852 as a lumber mill town. This Cape Cod style village in now an historical preservation district and a haven for artisans, and a popular location for television and theatrical films. The village sits on a high bluff and is surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean. The inland area is timber and agricultural and consisting largely of wine vineyards. A significant number of the residents are artists of various types, painters, sculptors, weavers, ceramicists, musicians, singers and actors. There are several state parks within 10 miles of the village and many miles of hiking and riding trails. The air is clean, clear and free of pollution.
