Upper Lake is the gateway to the Mendocino National Forest and the Snow Mountain wilderness area, where camping, hunting, and backpacking are among the popular activities. Horse trails and camps are found throughout the area. Fishing for trout and steelhead, boating, and swimming are enjoyed on Lake Pillsbury, a beautiful mountain lake in the hear of the National Forest.

Residences and businesses in the Upper Lake community have preserved the area's historical flavor with wooden facades and Western decor. Don't miss the annual Wild West Day in June, and come in costume if you like! The area is also known for its many antique shops on Main Street and Highway 20. The town's post office and fire department are located on Main Street. A branch of the Lake County Library is on Second Street.

The Upper Lake County Park on Highway 20 includes a playground, picnic facilities, a ball field, tennis and basketball courts, and the office of the Lake County Historical Society.
