Though a relatively young city, West Sacramento community life dates back to the Gold Rush.
Businesses will easily find health care, education and other retail and business services in and around West Sacramento. Urgent care and medical offices are located in the city and a full service hospital is located a few miles from the city center. Nine public schools and several private schools serve West Sacramento. The city's commitment to quality schools is evidenced by approval of a $25 million local school bond issue and a special commission on school excellence. Higher education is also within easy reach with four community colleges located nearby, including the West Sacramento Center of Sacramento City College. Five universities and numerous private colleges offer specialized degree and occupational training programs.

REGIONAL CULTURE AND RECREATION
West Sacramento is in the heart of the thriving Sacramento metropolitan area, known for its rich cultural offerings and proximity to world class, year-round recreation. The Sacramento Ballet and Opera, Music Circus and multiple theatre groups provide year round entertainment. The popular UC Davis Presents Program has a beautiful new venue: The Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts on the UC Davis Campus. The Mondavi Center will allow the university to expand the number of and variety of international performances in the Sacramento region. The annual Sacramento Dixieland Jazz Jubilee music festival takes place on the Sacramento and West Sacramento waterfront with local and international musicians entertaining throughout the weekend long festival. The city's Riverbank Music Festival event and the Harmony on the River summer concert series are popular regional events held at River Walk Park.
The Sacramento and American Rivers meet and define West Sacramento's northern and eastern boundaries, providing easy access to hiking, camping, boating, water skiing and fishing. The American River Parkway offers one of the finest riparian recreational corridors of any metropolitan area in the United States. Each weekend, thousands of Sacramentans bike along its shores, fly fish for salmon from its banks and wade and bathe on its pristine beaches and sandbars.
A few minutes across the Tower Bridge in downtown Sacramento are the retail shops and restaurants of the downtown area and historic Old Sacramento. Downtown attractions include the Crocker Art Museum, the State Railroad Museum, the Towe Antique Auto Museum, Sacramento Community Theatre, IMAX Theater and numerous nightclubs and restaurants.
Sacramentans are enthusiastic sports fans and support professional teams including the beloved NBA Kings, the women's NBA Sacramento Monarchs, the Sacramento Knights indoor soccer team, and West Sacramento's own River Cats, Triple A baseball affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. Residents regularly make the short drive to see the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers and Giants.
Just a two-hour drive from ski resorts in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and state parks on the scenic Northern California coast, Sacramento's location is ideal. The Napa Sonoma wine country is a leisurely one and a half hour's drive away, as are the cosmopolitan charms of San Francisco Bay.
PARKS AND RECREATION
West Sacramento's own outstanding recreation opportunities include 11 miles of river frontage, 22 neighborhood parks and community centers, the 18-hole Lighthouse public golf course and recreational programs for every interest. River Walk Park offers scenic access to the Sacramento River for passive recreation and community concerts and activities. Boaters can launch at the city's Broderick Boat Ramp as well as several private boating clubs and marinas that operate in the city. The annual River Bank Music Festival and summer concert series Harmony on the River are popular events at River Walk Park.
EDUCATION
Primary Education There are seven public elementary schools and two high schools in the Washington Unified School District. Southport Elementary School was built in July 1998 and features computer labs, library and Internet connections in the classrooms. Construction has begun on Bridgeway Lakes Elementary School, the second elementary school to serve the rapidly growing Southport area. Community leaders demonstrated their commitment to quality education with a successful campaign approving $25 million in local school bonds in 1996. Local school scores continue to rise each year in the Washington School District. In 2002, both Southport Elementary School and Westmore Oaks Elementary received the California Distinguished Schools Award.
