Alamosa County is located in South Central Colorado at an elevation of 7,544 feet. The County's high plains and flat valley expands 722 square miles, surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo mountain range to the east and the San Juan mountain range to the west. The famous Rio Grande River originates in the San Juan Mountains and flows through the San Luis Valley. EDUCATION Adams State College, founded in 1921, is home to 2,500 on-campus undergraduates and 7,000 extended students. Associates, bachelors and masters degrees are offered in 50 areas of study. Hispanic, Native American and cowboy art can be viewed at the college's Luther E. Bean Museum.
