Basalt of today is known as a vacation Mecca for families and sports enthusiasts. Located between Glenwood Springs and Aspen, world class skiing and cultural opportunities are only minutes away. Winter recreation opportunities in the Basalt Area include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and backcountry skiing. The warmer months bring access to white water rafting, kayaking, hiking, backpacking, biking and horseback riding. The Ruedi Reservoir area supports six developed campgrounds and several picnic areas. Also around the lake visitors will find fishing and boating access. The Roaring Fork and Fryingpan Rivers offer world-class fly and cast fishing waters. The Eagle-Thomasville Road and Hagerman Pass both provide scenic drives. Hagerman Pass is a 4wd road; the Eagle-Thomasville road is passable in regular cars when dry. Neither road is maintained in the winter months and Hagerman Pass is often impassable until well into July due to snow. If you like dry, and comfortable weather, then Basalt is the place for you! During the summer months, days are a very bearable 80, with cool evenings. Winter lows occasionally dip to minus 30 degrees, though daytime temperatures are often in the 20's to 30's. Most of the area and its recreation facilities lie at higher elevations where significantly lower temperatures and more precipitation can be expected. Afternoon summer thunderstorms are common. Snow is possible at any time of year in the highest elevations. The high elevation roads and trails are often not clear of snow until mid-July. Beauty comes with a price tag though, and Basalt is no exception, with starter homes (less than 1,200 square feet) selling for $249,000. A three or four bedroom, 1,800 square foot colonial-style home sells for $400,000 and up. There are many holiday rentals to be had, and in that regard, buying a home here as an investment makes good sense, as the holiday season really extends year round. Basalt has so much to offer its residents, safe neighborhood, great recreation, wonderful climate with four distinct seasons, all year round sports activities, and the opportunity to come home to a piece of paradise!
