Brighton, Colorado

Population: 20,905
Located in Adams County

Brighton is located just 20 miles northeast of downtown Denver on the edge of the eastern Colorado plains. Boasting a small town atmosphere and rich cultural and historic roots makes Brighton an ideal place to live, work and play.

The City of Brighton was incorporated July 26, 1887. Brighton began as Hughes Station. It was named after John Hughes who owned the stage line between Denver and Cheyenne. In 1879, Carmichael purchased 240 acres at Hughes Station from the Denver Pacific Railroad, and by 1882 owned 720 acres. He was "determined that there should be a town here that would do credit to the splendid valley." Mr. Carmichael's wife is credited for naming Brighton after her birthplace, Brighton Beach, New York.

By the time Brighton incorporated, it began to look like a real town. The first school was completed in 1885 and the historic 1886 Church, which has been preserved and is still used for weddings and other occasions, is located at 1st and Main Street in Brighton.

In 1904, Brighton was named the permanent county seat of Adams County as it was the most populous town in the county at that time. Brighton was a rural, agricultural area. It was the home of the Kuner Pickle Company and the Great Western Sugar Factory. The farming population was largely Japanese. The Japanese continue to play a strong role in the Brighton area as demonstrated by the still successful Sakata Farms.

The Brighton Recreation Center offers the community more than a weight room, aerobics classes, swimming pool, and a gym. The Center is also the heart of exciting activities for families, youth, teens, adults, and seniors alike.

The climate here is generally dry. This is because of the high elevation of the area. Denver is not called "The Mile High City" for nothing! Summers are warm, winters mild, and the sun plays a big part in the beauty of the area, with over 340 days of sunshine a year.

Brighton is located within an hour of several ski resorts, and the Rocky Mountain National Park is less than an hour away. Numerous cultural and sporting events are located in Denver, just a few minutes away. Sports fans don't have far to go to cheer for their favorite professional teams, and a crazy weekend can be had watching the local football teams, hockey matches and baseball games.

This is an extremely affordable area to live in, especially in comparison to other cities in and around Denver. A manufactured/mobile home, less than two years old sells for $19,000. A single family home, three bedrooms and two baths, in an established sub-division sells for around $160,000. Residential land is available in the area to build your own home complete with a gorgeous view. Land starts around $19,000. A modest 4 bedroom, 2 bathrooms, 1,500 square foot home would run about $180,000.

Brighton has so much to offer its residents, safe neighborhood, great recreation, wonderful climate with four distinct seasons, all year round sports activities, and the opportunity to come home to a piece of paradise!
