Castle Rock is an affluent and growing community. It is home to more than 46,200 people, with 100,000 expected at build out. Incorporated in 1881, Castle Rock has changed significantly over the years in residential and business growth. This once-tiny county seat now boasts a population of 23,000, according to 2000 town planning projections. The town is managed by a town council and manager form of government and is considered a home-rule community. As the seat for Douglas County, Castle Rock is home to many government offices and support services. In addition, the strong retail sector here contains a number of large employers coming from a broad spectrum of industries lending strength to the town with a diversified economy. "With a healthy mix of local companies and national chains, and a wide range of home-based and entrepreneurial businesses, the Castle Rock business community is thriving," according to Pam Ridler, president of the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce. Unemployment rates in Colorado are among the lowest in the country. With only two percent unemployed in Douglas County, nearly all of the 55,000 individuals currently in the county's workforce are gainfully employed. However, three quarters of the Castle Rock workforce currently commutes elsewhere to work. Of these commuters, 75 percent would prefer to work in town if equivalent jobs were available. This presents an ideal labor market for local businesses to draw from. Castle Rock enjoys a robust real estate market with the median price for a single-family at $249,798, with ranges from $110,000 to $1.3 million. As for shopping, the town is home to the Outlets at Castle Rock -- a top choice among shoppers from up and down the Front Range. In addition, the historic downtown features dozens of unique shops and restaurants. Offering small class sizes, and an excellent curriculum, Douglas County schools boasts of one of the lowest drop-out rates in Colorado. Douglas County School District RE-1 offers preschool programs, charter schools and an alternative high school in addition to the traditional elementary, middle school and high school. The District also offers English as a Second Language (ESL) for K-12 students and their parents. Students in Douglas County School District continue to outpace the state average on the Colorado Student Assessment Program. Results show Douglas County continues to exceed state averages in every grade and in every subject tested, topping metro area schools in 20 out of 26 tests. In Castle Rock, there are eight elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools and one alternative high school. In addition, there is one charter school in the town and two private elementary schools. Arapahoe Community College offers a growing number of classes in Castle Rock. Many colleges and universities are also located within a short commute to Denver or Colorado Springs. The City of Castle Rock partners with the Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Merchants Association and other local entities to host dozens of annual events which draw thousands of visitors to the city¹s proper from all across Colorado and the U.S. A few of these events include: Elephant Rock Bike Ride; Douglas County Fair, parade & rodeo; Artfest; Farmers Market; Starlighting; Starlight Summer Movie Series; Rockin' the Fourth celebration and more. Castle Rock is located at the doorstep of one of the world¹s most incredible natural recreation areas, the Rocky Mountains. Offering something for everyone, from bird watchers to the most extreme sports enthusiast, Colorado is one of the best places on earth to enjoy the great outdoors. The Castle Rock area also offers an active senior center with a wide range of community services, and the Castlewood Canyon State Park for those who wish to take a leisurely stroll among nature. The city¹s parks and recreation department operates an 84,000-square-foot recreation center that includes a state-of-the art indoor aquatic facility. The department also manages approximately 251 acres of parks, 2,612 acres of open space and 45 miles of paved and soft-surface trails. The City of Castle Rock¹s Police and Fire and Rescue Departments offer excellent emergency response services. In addition, there are many group medical practices and numerous specialists, orthodontists and dentists here. Sky Ridge Hospital is located just minutes north of Castle Rock and operates an imaging center and medical offices in several Castle Rock locations. Centura-Adventist Hospital is expected to begin construction on its 50-acre medical campus later this year.
