The largest town in Elbert County is Elizabeth, which was founded in 1890 and is 6,450 feet above sea level. Most of the population of Elbert County is located around the town of Elizabeth in small acreage subdivisions. Elizabeth is the home of the Elizabeth Stampede, a PRCA Rodeo held in early June. In addition to great rodeo events, there are many other activities such as summer music festivals. Elizabeth started out as Webber Sawmill. As the Denver & New Orleans Railroad came into the area, the town boomed. Elizabeth was named for Elizabeth Ray Kimbark Hubbard, who was the sister-in-law of Governor John Evans. It is said she was on the first train of the Denver New Orleans Railroad to reach Elizabeth in 1880. Like the rest of the county, Elizabeth is renowned for the breathtaking beauty of the mountains, the high altitude and the seasonal changes, that can deliver snow as early as September but then provide 70 degree weather for Christmas Day! Most of the homes in and around Elizabeth are built on acreage, with 4 acres being the average. Horses are encouraged in the region, and many families own one or a couple of horses. Farming has mostly gone by the wayside, but here and there are several smallholdings, where owners produce their own vegetables, and sell what is left. The average price for a three bedroom colonial (and that is the style mostly favored here) on four or more acres, generally with a storage shed, and an oversized garage is $259,000. Most people choose to live in Elizabeth because they love the solitude, and the fact that they feel close to nature, but they still need to make a living, and many of them take the short drive into Denver, coming home at the end of the day to tranquility. With so much going for it, is it any wonder that is town is the largest in the county? Come and check out Elizabeth, we guarantee if Denver is in your future, you'll want to live here!
