Fort Carson, ColoradoOn August 27, 1954, Carson became a fort. Fort Carson is located south of Colorado Springs, between Interstate 25 and Highway 115. The current size of the Fort is 138,523 acres. This post is recognized as one of the world?s premier locations to lead, train and prepare soldiers to win on the battlefield. Fort Carson is home to 3rd Brigade Headquarters, 43rd Area Support Group, 10th Special Forces Group and the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. The population of Fort Carson includes 15,628 active duty, 65,576 family members, and 2,797 civilians. Fort Carson has a very large commissary, a large exchange, a mall, and four shoppettes. Recreation at Fort Carson includes bowling, auto hobby club, gym, tennis, swimming pools, fishing and stables. The 18-hole golf course is playable year round. The clubhouse is beautiful, and the golf carts have their own GPS systems. There are three elementary schools and one middle school on post, run by Fountain-Fort Carson School District. Fort Carson On January 6, 1942, one month after the attack on Pearl Harbor, it was announced that Colorado Springs had been selected as the site for an army camp. The installation would be named Camp Carson in honor of Brigadier General Christopher ?Kit? Carson, the famous frontiersman. The original military reservation consisted of 60,048 acres of land. The peak troop strength of the installation was in late 1943, when approximately 43,000 military personnel were stationed at the camp. |
