La Veta is situated on the eastern side of La Veta Pass through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and at the northern opening of the Cuchara River Valley. Just south of town is the foot of the West Spanish Peak. At the southern edge of town is the eighteen hole, Tom Weiskopf designed Grandote Golf Course. La Veta is surrounded by the Great Dikes of the Spanish Peaks - large, vertical granite formations that radiate outward from the Spanish Peaks. These days the town has become known throughout Colorado as an artist colony, although there are still plenty of cattle ranchers and an elk rancher or two. If you're looking for a rural area where the bears still trundle into town occasionally, you've come to the right place! Along with large tracts of water, and forests, this area is a haven for bears and other wildlife. Temperatures are mild too, with winter temperatures dipping into the mid 30's, and the summer temperatures seldom getting above 80. But with over 300 days of sunshine in a year, La Veta is a great place for the sunlovers of the world! Many homes here are built on at least 10 acres, many of them more than that, and a wonderful view is a guarantee in this part of the state. Expect to pay a higher price for it though.
