Palmer Lake, ColoradoPalmer Lake Located on the northern edge of El Paso County, 20 miles from downtown Colorado Springs, and 40 miles from Denver, lies the town of Palmer Lake. Approximately 2300 inhabitants reside in Palmer Lake. Palmer Lake, the town of Monument, and the unincorporated community of Woodmoor make up what is known as the Tri-Lakes area. The three lakes are Lake Woodmoor, Monument Lake and Palmer Lake. The Ute, Arapahoe, Kiowa and Cheyenne Tribes first settled the area. In 1820, an army expedition discovered the Colorado State Flower, the Columbine, somewhere between Palmer Lake and Monument. In 1883, the town of Palmer Lake was planned and named. It is named after General Palmer, although he never resided there. In the early days the water from the lake played an important role in the local economy. The lake became a critical water supply stop for the D&RG steam engines. The ice was also harvested from the lake and sold for refrigeration purposes. Today, the area is mainly used for hiking and bicycling. The 14-mile Santa Fe Regional Trail begins at Palmer Lake. The trail runs south through Monument to the south boundary of the Air force Academy. The Tri-Lakes communities reside within Lewis-Palmer School District #38.
