Nestled deep in the Rocky Mountain Heartland is the small community of Poncha Springs, or simply called ?Poncha? by the locals. In the 1840?s Kit Carson explored the Poncha Pass region and found natural springs. This is where the town gets their name ?Poncha Springs?. Today the hot water is transported by pipeline to the Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center. Poncha Springs itself is referred to as the ?Crossroads of Fourteener Country? because there are more than 14,000-foot mountain peaks in the Chaffee County than any other county. The entire region is called the ?14ers region?. Colorado enjoys an average of 330 days of sunshine a year! With those odds, outdoor recreation certainly tops the list. There is so much to do in the Rocky Mountains including mountain biking, white water rafting, camping, mountain climbing just to name a few. The region is affectionately called ?The Banana Belt? because during the winter months, one can go skiing in the morning, and golfing in the afternoon! If you are really looking for some western adventure, be sure and check out one of the many ghost towns that are scattered throughout Chaffee County. Several different species of wildlife find there home in this Rocky Mountain region. The Five Points Recreation Area is a favorite spot for the bighorn sheep to be viewed. Elk and mountain goats are familiar sights around the Peaks Region. Bald and Golden Eagles alike can be seen soaring over the mountaintops. Elk herds also populate this area of the region and it is not uncommon for a deer to walk right into town. Poncha Springs is a smaller town with a population of almost 500 people affording wonderful, rural living. Other communities are nearby making up the 14ers region creating options for shopping and other centerpieces for life. Denver is a 2-hour drive and Colorado Springs is a 3 hour drive.
