In the mid-80's, Brookfield was recognized as the fastest -growing town in Fairfield County, a fact which might suggest rampant development and loss of original character, Fortunately, neither has happened.

Named for Thomas Brooks, it first resident minister, Brookfield was incorporated in 1788. Its 1988 bicentennial celebration found the town prospering and enjoying a quality of life that combines country and suburban advantages.

Schools, parks, recreation, and a verifiable community spirit make Brookfield what it is today. Indicative of the commitment to education are the SAT scores registered by college-bound seniors, year after year, rising above averages both nationally and for Connecticut. When the town began construction of a new playground, the townspeople pitched in to help build and equip it.

A major facility in the town is the Regional "Y" of Western Connecticut, located on a 21-acre site that accommodates a 36,000 sq. ft. "Y" Center with pools, racquet courts and exercise areas, plus outdoor facilities that include a large camping area, more pools, a child care center, picnic pavilion and more.

Another unique feature in Brookfield is its Craft Center, where instruction and showings are held that attract nation-wide participation as well as local attention. The Country Players theater group, an active senior center, and many social and civic organizations round out the lifestyle of a vigorous and caring community.
