The town of East Hartford is located in Central Connecticut and was settled in 1640 as part of the city of Hartford. It finally became a chartered town in 1783 and was named East Hartford. The town has a strong Mayor form of government with a nine member Town Council. It has 18.7 square miles of land area and the current population is estimated to be 50,452. The town has approximately 650 acres of town land set aside for recreational purposes. Some of the recreational highlights are both indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, ball fields with lighting, an 18 hole public golf course, a riverfront park with a boat launch and several miles of newly constructed nature trails along the Hockanum river. The town has over 100 diversified manufacturing plants, including world renowned United Technologies. The police department includes 125 officers and the Fire Department has 131 firefighters. East Hartford is located approximately half-way between New York City and Boston with immediate access to Interstate Highways 84 & 91 and the Route 2 Expressway. Bradley International Airport is 20 minutes away. East Hartford is one of the most affordable areas for housing in Greater Hartford.
