The City of Hartford is located midway between New York City and Boston and is the capital of Connecticut. The city encompasses 18.4 miles and is located on the banks of the Connecticut River. Interstate 84 & 91 interchange in the city, affording major highway access. Hartford is nicknamed the "Insurance City" because it has more insurance companies than any other city in the world. The city boasts Wadsworth Athenaeum, the nation's oldest public parks and two 18-hole public golf courses. The Government is a Council-Manager form with an elected 9 member court of Common Council, an elected major and an appointed city manager. Riverfront Recapture, an organization created several years ago, has been coordinating the development of a system of parks and recreational facilities along the river in the Hartford area and now has waterfront parks, boat launching, paved walkways and several other recreational facilities. A promenade is currently under construction and will access the riverfront from the center of the city. Recently, the prospect of a 1 billion dollar waterfront development was announced by a major local insurance company.
