What is now the town of was part of a tract acquired from the Mohegan by a group of settlers from Norwich. Since the town was incorporated in the year 1702 Mansfield has remained a largely rural community. The principle industry early on was farming. In fact, what is now the main campus of The University of Connecticut was originally the Storrs Agricultural School which was founded in 1881. Home now to the 1999 NCAA Men's Basketball Champions and 1999 Big East Woman's Basketball Champions, Storrs and all of Mansfield is at the center of collegiate activities in Connecticut. The sprawling UCONN campus covers some 3000 acres in this Eastern Connecticut town.
