Milford is located on the north shore of Long Island Sound, midway between New Haven and Bridgeport, and boasts 20 miles of beautiful natural shoreline. Milford has the most extensive shoreline out of any town/city in the state. Settled in 1639, Milford is the 6th oldest town in Connecticut. It was built up along the shores of the Wepawaug River which meets the sound in a natural harbor. A waterfall provided power for the early grist mill and "the Mill by the Ford" became the center of town. Today the waterfall with its tow "duck" ponds is our designated historic district. You can feed the ducks in the summer and skate on the ponds in the winter. The Milford Public School System serves over 6,000 students in pre-kindergarten through high school. The city has two high schools, three middle schools, and nine elementary schools. Milford also hosts several private schools including: Laurelton Hall, Milford Academy, St. Mary's, Saint Ann's, and Saint Gabriels. The state operates Platt Regional Vocational Technical School as well. The Milford Public Library is located in downtown Milford. It is very involved in the community with story hour for young children as well as being home to the Milford Chamber of Commerce and the Fine Arts Council. Milford recreation consists of 3 public parks, 15 playgrounds, 6 public beaches, 2 swimming pools, 2 boat ramps, salt and fresh water fishing, private marinas and yacht clubs in the Milford Harbor and on the Housatonic River, an all year ice skating rink, and amusement center, jai-alai fronton, 34 tennis courts, 2 state of the art movie theaters, a bowling facility, racquetball club, a nine hole golf course and several 18 hole private and public courses in surrounding communities. Milford is intersected by I-95 (Connecticut Turnpike), Route 15 (Merritt Parkway), and U.S. 1 (Boston Post Road). There is local bus service and limited intracity bus service. Commuter bus service is available to New Haven. ConRail and Amtrak passenger service is available to New York and Boston. There are several Municipal airports: Bridgeport Municipal Airport (7 miles from Milford), Tweed New Haven Airport (17 miles from Milford), Bradley International Airport (Hartford/60 minutes), Kennedy and LaGuardia Airports in New York are 75 miles away. Limousine service is available to all major airports. Milford boasts 20 Houses of Worship representing all major faiths.
