Founded in 1844, Naugatuck is an Algonquin Indian name meaning "lone tree by the fishing place."

Naugatuck grew rapidly because of its location along strong waterways that ran local mills and factories, and provided shipping for goods.

In 1849, a railroad line constructed along the Naugatuck River significantly impacted the local economy, enabling manufacturers to receive coal and raw material and transport finished products to the Connecticut coast for shipment all over the world.
