New Haven can be considered one of southern New England's primary cultural, educational, and urban centers. One of the earliest cities in the country to begin renewal projects, the city concentrated first on commerce, industry, and more recently to housing and services for residents. Housing in New Haven varies from old brownstones and historic mansions to high-rise apartment towers and condominiums. There are almost no single-family units being built, though many are available in pleasant neighborhoods throughout the city.

The New Haven school system has all the advantages and problems of any large metropolitan system. There are over 30 elementary schools, including middle schools and three high schools. There is also a full parochial system, as well as several vocational schools. All of New Haven's colleges, universities, museums, and cultural activities combine to create a stimulating atmosphere of learning.

New Haven has all the convenience of living in a city. First class shopping facilities include major department and specialty stores, boutiques, and factory outlet shops all located in central New Haven as well as suburban mails. The city is also home to many renowned restaurants. Two extensive and excellent hospital complexes can be found in New Haven, as well as many neighborhood health centers and clinics. There are more than 2300 acres of parks in the city offering playing fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, and picnic areas. An active recreation department supervises athletic programs in all sports and for all age groups. Facilities are also available for public and private golf, and ice-skating rinks. The Yale Bowl and New Haven Coliseum provide the spaces for many athletic and cultural events which draw people from across the entire northeast. New Haven also supports a large number of theaters, museums, and musical events. Along Long Island Sound there are beaches, harbor cruises, fishing, boating, and a summer-long jazz festival.
