Ridgefield, Connecticut

Population: 23,643
Located in Fairfield County

Who knew that a small village founded in 1708, by only thirty families from the Long Island Sound settlements who bought these lands from the Ramapoo Indians, would turn into such a warm and cultural town? During its first few years, it began to grow, and in 1777, its place in history was assured by the Battle of Ridgefield, when the citizenry found themselves defending these lands against the British. This area has now been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a British cannonball can still be seen lodged in the Keeler Tavern, which is now the home of the Ridgefield Historical Society. Since then, Ridgefield has had a rich history, which includes personalities such as Benedict Arnold, who fought here, and Eugene O'Neil, who wrote here.

As you make your way down Ridgefield's charming Main Street, lined with museums, churches, shops, boutiques, and stately homes, you will pass by joggers, walkers, moms with strollers, young cyclists, and couples, each exchanging a smile and a friendly greeting. You can enjoy taking a quiet stroll through nearby Ballard Park, with its beautiful flower bushes and freshly cut grass, and have a coffee within its grand gazebo. You may also wish to admire a variety of young art displayed in the Ridgefield Guild of Artists, or stop by the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art and enjoy paintings, photography and magnificent sculptures. If you would rather indulge in the performing arts, the Ridgefield Theater Barn is for you, a community theater featuring musicals and plays. You may wish to enjoy an evening enjoying Ridgefield's world-class dining, from its country inns to modern bistros, and then going to listen to the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra, bringing high quality musical experiences to its audiences for over a dozen years. The Garden of Ideas, a beautiful garden home to the collection of diverse plants, birds, and bugs, may be a fun weekend excursion to have with the kids, or maybe a through the aisles of the old, Ridgefield Library with its vast assortment of works by authors from any time period. During the summer, the hot spots include the Ridgefield Golf Course, where you and your peers can enjoy a game of golf during a sunny afternoon. If you're interested in a competitive game of tennis, then Ridgefield Athletic Club is your destination, with a full gym and pool. A small and peaceful town, but with still so many activities and places to visit, is one of the reasons so many people come to visit Ridgefield!

Another reason Connecticut Magazine rated this Fairfield County town Number 1 in 1998, when compared to other Connecticut towns with populations of 20,000 to 50,000, was its commitment to educational excellence, recreational opportunities, cultural awareness, balanced town planning, economy and safety, and to a community that cares about the well-being of all its inhabitants. A mere 40-minute commute to lower Westchester County in New York State as well as less than thirty minutes from Westchester Airport, and less than an hour away from Stewart Airport, La Guardia Airport, and JFK International Airport in New York City, Ridgefield is in close proximity to the city life, without the hectic atmosphere.
