A two-layered town, Stratford has many historic corners like the Boothe Memorial Park and the Academy Hill Historic District replete with their fine architecture and old New England ambiance blended with the considerable presence of all that 20th-century industry has added. Lying at the mouth of the Housatonic River, its 19 square-mile area has a population of about 50,000. Stratford enjoys the classic coastal town's components of Long Island Sound and river frontage and a typical Connecticut woods and fields interior. As named by its English settlers, Stratford keeps a Shakespearean theme alive. The American Shakespeare Festival, founded by the late Lawrence Langner (founder of the Theatre Guild in New York), began in 1955. This elaborate festival on spacious grounds overlooking the Housatonic River drew hundreds of thousands of summer visitors. The stage lights are out and the state-owned site, though still a great picnic spot, is awaiting future decision-making. There's a Shakespeare stained glass window in the public library and, of course, Jerry's Shakespeare Apizza. Stratford is an attractive town with a beautiful location and a solid base of tradition, service, and can-do spirit.
