West Hartford is located in Central Connecticut adjacent to and west of the City of Hartford, the state capital. The Town is also bounded by the Towns of Bloomfield, Newington, Farmington and Avon. It is approximately 100 miles southwest of Boston and 100 miles northeast of New York City. Direct access to Interstate 84 (east / west) is available with Interstate 91 (north / south) just a few miles east. The Town encompasses 22.2 square miles and has a population of over 60,000. West Hartford functions primarily as a residential suburb of the Hartford metropolitan area. The Town encompasses a full range of quality housing from affordable starter homes to luxury estates. The Town's desirable residential environment is matched by a profitable and diversified retail base, recently strengthened by the Town Council's approval of a new major retail center in the southeast section of Town. Additionally, the Town has a smaller but significant manufacturing presence with emphasis on firearms, tools and metal finishing. The West Hartford school system has been recognized for years as one of the best in the state. The Town has earned a reputation of excellence for its many recreational opportunities and provides a comprehensive range of municipal services.
