Wethersfield, Connecticut

Population: 26,271
Located in Hartford County

Settled in 1634, Wethersfield is one of Connecticut's oldest towns. The pleasing colonial character of its early days is still evident today in the exceptional number of preserved homes and buildings, and its quaint old New England charm.

These qualities are most notably preserved in the Old Wethersfield section of town - a designated historic district rich in stately seventeenth and eighteenth century architecture, including the Webb-Deane-Stevens House and the Bottolph Williams House. This area, along with additional areas of Wethersfield, offer a tremendous selection of residences, ranging from historic colonials and older homes in traditional styles to contemporary designs and new housing developments. Life in Wethersfield is further enhanced by its close proximity to Hartford for employment, shopping and entertainment, and its appealing location on the Connecticut River.

Once a bustling agricultural community, colonial Wethersfield relied on the river to transport goods to market. Today, the river and surrounding farmlands provide a pastoral setting for pleasant living and excellent recreational opportunities. Tennis, ice-skating, swimming and golf, as well as a variety of organized team sports and a summer day camp are sponsored by the recreation and parks department. Marine pleasures are enjoyed at scenic Wethersfield Cove.

While residents are dedicated to preserving the historical character of Wethersfield, they are equally enthusiastic in supporting a modern school system. Four elementary schools, a middle school and a high school provide a strong academic foundation and numerous special services. A number of preschools and a private parochial system are also available. The Connecticut School of Fine arts and the Connecticut School of Interior Design offer an arts curriculum, and a wide selection of fine colleges and universities are within easy reach.
