Several "firsts" were attributed to Delaware during the American Revolution. The Stars and Stripes was said to have flown first during the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge on September 3, 1777. Delaware was the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution on December 7, 1787.
During the Civil War, Delaware was just as divided as the country. Although it was a Slave State, it didn’t have a large Slave population. Most of the Slave holding citizens lived in the rural south and Delaware was an important stop on the underground railroad. It also played a major role in the smuggling of necessities, such as food and medical supplies to the rebels.
Delaware owes its stable economy to its natural waterways, which made domestic and foreign markets very accessible. Since the first powder mill was opened in 1802, Delaware’s importance in manufacturing and commerce has continued to grow. Texiles, paper products, leather goods, iron products, steel products and refined oil are some of the chief economic drivers. The southern part of the state is the agricultural center. Corn, soybeans and potatoes are shipped in privately owned trucks.
Delaware does not have a statewide sales tax, but there is an 8 percent Hotel Occupancy tax.
The miles of oceanic shore makes Delaware’s eastern seaboard a major resort center. Surfing, boating, fishing and camping can all be found in virtually ever corner of the state. Deep sea fishing is especially good right off the coast searching for marlin and tuna.
