Townsend, Delaware

Before 1850, the Townsend area was called Charlie Town. It was a cluster of cabins and one of the residents was named Charles. Then, Samuel Townsend, a wealthy man, bought property in the area. Levi Lattomus opened the first store in 1851. In 1885, the town was incorporated and it was named Townsend after Samuel Townsend. The population was 350. The post office was built the next year. The peach business was very popular. During the six week peach season, 800 baskets were shipped to Philadelphia and New York each day. The peach business ended when all of the trees died. The population reached 800 by 1908. Townsend was a big railroad stop. Manufacturing included a creamery and cannery which are not here today. A building and loan company was organized in the 1880's and was a success.Then Townsend's population went down. The 1970 census show the population to be 505 and the 1980 census was 386. There is not a bank in town today. There is a post office, fire house, and several churches. The creamery and cannery are gone. Two eating establishments exist and you can get a haircut.
