Cocoa Beach, Florida
Population: 12,482 Located in Brevard County
POINTS OF INTEREST: Cocoa Beach Pier; Surfside Playhouse. FAST FACT: First homestead by freed slaves after the Civil War. INCORPORATED: 1925. Located on a barrier island nestled between the great Atlantic Ocean and the Banana River Lagoon on Florida's Central East Coast, Cocoa Beach continues to link the birth of the Space Age with the wonder of the future. The City of Cocoa Beach was established on June 5, 1925. It was incorporated as a City on June 29, 1957. There was a 1,000 percent population increase in the decade between 1950 and 1960. Just six miles long and mostly less than one mile wide, Cocoa Beach is truly a unique place! Where else can you choose between watching a space launch from the beach or precious marine and bird species in their natural habitat? Or choose between a swim in the ocean or a quiet kayak exploration off the Banana River islands from our river shore? Play a round of golf at our 27-hole golf course, surf cast from the beach for dinner or just enjoy a day at the beach where you will likely see dolphins at play or be lucky enough to see an occasional whale in migration. Widely known as the surfing capitol of the East Coast, Cocoa Beach is the hometown of a number of surfing champions - including six time world champ Kelly Slater. Of course, the primary attraction to Cocoa Beach is the weather. With its coastal location and positioned where two climatic zones (sub-tropic and temperate) meet, our weather usually avoids extremes. This unique location thus attracts wildlife indigenous to both climatic zones as well as coastal and migratory species. And, of course, our weather, beaches and local amenities attract human visitors as well. Many of our residents first experienced Cocoa Beach as visitors and eventually relocated here! Cocoa Beach is a residential community and a tourist destination. Our base population is 12,800, Although the population swells to as high as approximately 30,000 during the peak tourist season. In addition, Cocoa Beach is the destination for another 2.4 million day visitors per year. Cocoa Beach is the primary tourist destination on the Florida Space Coast. It is also home to an active retiree population, many of whom devoted their careers to our nation's space program. The casual beach lifestyle is enjoyed by visitors and residents alike! Cocoa Beach's population has remained in the 12,000 to 12,800 range since the early 1970's. Even though housing units, primarily condominiums, continue to grow in our city, the population has remained level. The reason for this is that many property owners have second homes in Cocoa Beach but maintain their primary residences elsewhere. When census-takers come around, people who own primary residences elsewhere are counted in the population where their primary residences are located. Homes are very reasonably priced, which is why this is such a popular place for people to choose as a secondary residence. Homes located right on the beach cost more, and range from $170,000 and up, but homes further “inland” (remember, this is an island after all!)can be as inexpensive as $65,000 and sometimes even less. The City of Cocoa Beach has within its city limits three public schools (two elementary and one junior-senior high school) and two faith-based schools. Cocoa Beach is part of the Brevard County School District. The Brevard County School District is one of the top ten districts in the State of Florida based on the May 2003 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) scores. In the May 2003 edition of Newsweek Magazine, Cocoa Beach High School was one of the top 200 public high schools in the United States. CBHS was ranked number 188 out of over 26,000 public high schools in the United States To the west of the City, you will find the Thousands Islands. The Thousand Islands are located in the Banana River. The Banana River and the seventeen lakes which are located on the golf course at the Cocoa Beach Country Club provide a habitat which attracts an abundance of waterfowl and other birds. The birds provide an enjoyable attraction for the golfers. Having a "name" for each golf hole is one of the oldest traditions in the game of golf. The Cocoa Beach Country Club has decided to name its 27 golf holes after one of the predominant species of birds seen on the golf course. The scorecard and the granite tee signs portray the name of the bird for each golf hole. The waterfowl, other birds, the dolphins, alligators, turtles and raccoons make the Cocoa Beach Country Club a true habitat and wildlife sanctuary for the enjoyment of all golfers. The City of Cocoa Beach owns and operates the only outdoor solar-heated Olympic sized swimming pool in the State of Florida. The Aquatic Center is located at the Cocoa Beach Country Club, which is a public facility. The Cocoa Beach Country Club is located on the river at the western end of Minutemen Causeway. What are you waiting for? Cocoa Beach is waiting for you!
