The name was taken from an Oregon town of the same name, and Indian name meaning “laughing waters”. The area was incorporated on November 8, 1904. Umatilla is home to the Florida Black Bear Festival, a fun and educational event held the first Saturday in October. The Cracker Christmas Parade and Dog Jog is held each year on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. An Arts & Crafts festival in Cadwell Park follows the parade.
