The state song, "Georgia on My Mind" by Hoagy Carmichael was originally written about a woman of that name, but after Georgia native Ray Charles sang it, the State legislature voted it the official state song. To many, this act symbolized the move away from segregation and racism and toward equality.

Few states of the Deep south have met the challenges of change with the resourcefulness and success of Georgia. Their agriculture is now diverse, unlike a few years ago when it was dependent solely on cotton. The state has sought to equalize opportunities for a once enslaved people by initiating the integration of its schools and public facilities.

Georgia is now known as The Empire State of the South as it is the largest state east of the Mississippi River. Thousands of national concerns have offices in Atlanta, because of this, one of the downtown intersections is aptly called the Wall Street of the South. No longer is Georgia thought of as a state of small towns and rural areas.

Textile manufacturing is the symbol of the Georgia economy, accounting for $10.2 billion in state revenue. The forestry industry, which covers approximately two-thirds of the state, is one of the main suppliers feeding our paper hungry world.

A statewide sales tax of four percent is levied, with local options for minimal, additional increments.

The state is also versatile in its recreation, offering luxurious resorts to quiet backwoods trails satisfying everyone’s taste. Some of the more popular recreation areas include Jekyll, St. Simons, Gallaway Gardens and Lake Seminole.

Excellent saltwater fishing can be found in the coastal channels along with surfing and beaches at Sea Island. Bass, bream, shad and catfish will satisfy the freshwater fisherman and those same lakes also provide most of the other popular water sports. The Chattahoochee National Forest, which the Chattahoochee River runs through, offers fishing, rafting, canoeing and hiking.
