Best of All, Athens is affordable, with most of our major attractions charging no admission fee! In addition, Downtown Athens is home to restaurants, bars, and shops, catering to the city's diverse populations. Many of these outlets reflect Athens's status as a university town and a small liberal city. In particular, independent music stores and alternative shops are found along Clayton Street. In recent years, nightlife for this demographic has been concentrated in the neighborhood's rapidly changing "West End," the area between Lumpkin and Pulaski Streets. Nightlife catering to a more mainstream college-age demographic remains in the eastern part of the neighborhood, especially along Broad and Clayton Streets. Downtown Athens also features a variety of eating options, including higher-priced luxury dining, chain restaurants, ethnic food restaurants, and inexpensive bar food. The streets, particularly on Thursday through Saturday, are filled with people and cars late into the night. The area has several hotels and apartment buildings, and more high-rise condos are either under construction or planned for the area. Some of these high-rises as well as the construction of the new Multi-Modal Transportation Center have the potential to redefine the area encompassing downtown Athens to stretch east to the banks of the Oconee River.
From a few bands that started something different (The B-52's, Pylon, REM, and Widespread Panic) and gave Athens national attention, there are now hundreds of active bands, over 10 recording studios, and several independent record labels. World-famous venues, such as the 40 Watt Club and the Georgia Theatre, continue to attract up-and-coming musical acts as well as old favorites. AthFest in late June attracts over 120 bands that play on indoor and outdoor stages throughout the weekend. But Athens' musical heritage involves more than rock and roll; noted African-American musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Cab Calloway performed at The Morton Theatre. With jazz, classical, blues, country, and rock performances occurring on a regular basis, Athens provides one of the most diverse and affordable music scenes in the world. Athens was named after the famous Athens, Greece because of its lush greenery, and wonderful climate. It has become a Mecca for those looking for art and culture in the south - it is truly an "Athens of America"! Looking for more info? Visit www.visitathensga.com
