Canton, Georgia

Population: 122,300
Located in Cherokee County

The county seat of Cherokee County was established in 1833 and re-named Canton in 1834. Once famous for its "Canton Denim," known world-wide for the high-quality denim produced by Canton Cotton Mills, the City of Canton is now enjoying the greatest economic boom in its history. More than 60 million dollars was invested in residential and commercial development in our city in 1998.

Many projects are underway, including new construction, renovation and revitalization. We have received $700,000 in grants for home improvements in the city and have been able to use that money to renovate and improve homes in the downtown area for residents who qualify. The city's five public buses have established routes and carry hundreds of passengers throughout the city from residential areas to downtown, shopping areas, the medical district and job sites.

The newly-designed theater on Main Street will feature plays and other special entertainment events when renovation is complete, injecting new life into our downtown business district. Other improvements downtown include the restoration of the Cherokee County Arts Council building, renovation of former retail space into office buildings, and facade improvements made by existing business owners. Streets in the downtown area are set for a new look as part of the "Streetscapes" program, bringing a classic look to sidewalks and other outside areas.

We now have one of the finest movie theaters in Georgia, along with many excellent restaurants for our enjoyment. Several other restaurant facilities are scheduled to open soon. This development for shopping, eating, and entertainment is drawing many visitors from great distances to our city. The response and feed-back has been very positive about our city.

Our reservoir project is on schedule and should be complete by the year 2002. This water source will provide 55 million gallons of water per day and will be bordered by 15-25 acres of park land with picnic and other public areas.

The Mayor's Youth Design Team, made up of 12 Cherokee High School students from all grade levels, was recently created to advise city government on the ideas and needs of the youth in the area. Young men and women are key players in our community. They should and will be nurtured and engaged as partners in developing the future direction of the City of Canton.

Just for Fun! Attractions - Each year 13 million visitors enjoy Lake Allatoona, an 11,860 acre lake built and operated by the Army Corps of Engineers. Water sports from boating, fishing, swimming are available, while camping, picnicking, and hunting are also allowed in designated areas. Lake Arrowhead offers more private cottages and water sports, while Dixie Speedway provides thrilling stock car racing.

Cultural Arts- The Cherokee county Arts Center is currently under construction. It will house the Cherokee County Arts Council, a performance theater and a museum and education center.

Recreation - Cherokee County's Parks and recreation Departments operates 10 parks that offer ball fields, athletic leagues for all ages, public tennis courts, picnic areas and more. Several private country clubs offer championship golf and large swim and tennis centers.
