The Newton County Convention and Visitors Bureau offers group tours of five different homes, each with their own unique story and place in history. Some offer an almost unchanged look at the past while others have been completely remolded and refurbished and still others offer a peek into the lifestyle of days gone by.
Group tours are scheduled through the Convention and Visitors Bureau and are $6 per person, per home with a $115 minimum on each home. In addition to home tours, we offer step-on tour guides to share the history of Newton County and much more for $50 per hour. For nature lovers, we are home to both the Charlie Elliot Wildlife Center and the Georgia Wildlife Federation. Each offers extensive outdoor activities including hiking, bird watching and many educational opportunities. Charlie Elliot is also home to the Marben Public Fishing Area and Clybel Wildlife Management Area that provides hunting, a shooting range, an archery trail, camping and nature trails.
For the nature and sports fans Turner Lake Complex, home to the Newton County Recreation Commission, brings together serene nature trails and a peaceful lake with state-of-the-art softball facilities, a recreational league football field, two basketball courts in a fabulous gym with a walking track.
Other recreational opportunities can be found at the Covington Family YMCA and at one of our 13 beautiful parks managed by the Newton County Recreation Commission.
Whether watching the filming of a motion picture or enjoying a world renowned violinist, many opportunities abound for a resident or visitor in Newton County. Covington is affectionately referred to as "Hollywood South" because of the numerous television shows, motion pictures, and videos filmed in our community. Visitors frequent the community in search of Sparta, the fictional town from "In the Heat of the Night." Other visitors wish to stroll through the beautifully restored ante-bellum homes and gardens, visit our wildlife centers or tour a winery. The Newton County Library, part of the PINES Library system, offers quiet reading areas and beautiful views as well as a children's area complete with story time and puppet shows. Oxford College students host several productions throughout the year at the Tarbutton Performing Arts Center, on campus, as well as other programs for the public. The Choral Guild and the Community Band are excellent opportunities for those that are musically gifted to share their talents.
