A native son, Henry L. Benning, so distinguished himself as a Confederate General that the U.S. War department named a newly constructed Infantry school in his honor in the 1920's. Today, Ft. Benning is the world's largest infantry training center. It serves as home for the U.S. infantry, which includes Airborne and Ranger Schools as well as the School of the America. Located along the Chattahoochee River and adjacent to Columbus, the post covers 181,000 acres (285 square mile). With land, buildings and improvements valued well over $320 million, Fort Benning contributes over $55 million per month to the local economy in payroll and disbursements.
