Fort Gordon is near Augusta on the far east side of the state in the area known as the Central Savannah River Area. Augusta is Georgia's second oldest city, founded in 1736. Fort Gordon is a military base with on-site and off-site opportunities for accommodations and recreation.

Fort Gordon is like a city. The garrison provides logistical and community services necessary for the day-to-day operation of the installation. The garrison command is responsible for maintaining high-quality living and working conditions for all military and civilian personnel.

Augusta is home to the Lynx hockey team, Greenjackets baseball team, Stallions arena football team and U.S. men's and women's sculling teams. The Aiken Triple Crown, a spring showcase of the nation's top thoroughbred horses, is held in nearby Aiken, South Carolina.

Water recreation is available at nearby Strom Thurmond Lake, which has 1,200 miles of shoreline and fishing, boating, swimming, sailing and skiing. Camping, hunting and fishing are available throughout the area

Cultural events and facilities abound in the area, including Arts in the Heart of Augusta, the Morris Museum of Art, and Augusta Symphony. Perhaps you would like to take in an excellent opera performed by the Augusta Opera, or a ballet performance from the outstanding Augusta Ballet. Also, the Signal Corps Band, officially known as 434th Army Band, plays at many local events.

Natural beauty abounds in the area. Augusta is only a short drive from Thurmond Lake, also known as Clarks Hill Lake, which is the largest man-made lake east of the Mississippi. Fort Gordonis only about two hours from the Atlantic Ocean, and about three hours from the Appalachian Mountains.

Of course, Augusta is the center of the golfing universe the first weekend of April, when the Masters is held here at Augusta National. There is plenty of golf available for the more typical golfer as well, with almost twenty public and private courses in the area.

The area's climate is moderate and comfortable for most of the year. Winters are generally mild, with lows in the thirties and forties and highs in the fifties and sixties. Spring and fall are unpredictable, with wide variations in temperature and conditions. Summer can be hot! July and August are usually the hottest months, with high humidity and temperatures around the 100 degree mark.

Excellent, affordable housing is available in nearby Grovetown, or Harlem. The choices range from apartment complexes, affordable homes in $70,000-$90,000 price range. There are also gated communities with estate level properties. Before signing any lease, you need to check with the garrison to ensure that you have chosen a good location.

Relocation to this area is made smooth by the efforts of Fort Gordon to ensure that you find good housing quickly, but you will find yourself falling in love with the area, and the all wonderful things you can do here!
