Lavonia is located in Franklin County. Franklin County was created in 1784 from lands obtained from the Cherokee Indian Nation, and named for Benjamin Franklin. It covered a large part of upper Georgia, from the present day borders of Rabun and Towns counties to Clark and from the Savannah river to the Oconee in Hall and Jackson counties. The county seat of Carnesville was laid out in 1805 and named for Thomas Peter Carnes.

Homes range in style and price, depending on the location. Farmhouses are dotted around the landscape, with neighbors few and far between; but closer into Carnesville you will find the more traditional sub-divisions, with amenities and regular city size lots. Prices range from $100,000 for a three bedroom home all the way to the high hundred thousands for a farmhouse, or new home built on large lots of lands, or acreage.

Georgia enjoys a mild climate year round. During the winter months, the temperatures have been known to dip into the teens, but have been as high is 54 degrees. The summer months enjoy the high 80’s. With such wonderful weather, Georgia is perfect for outdoor recreation. With State Forests and a river, there is plenty to occupy anyone, whether it is hiking, swimming, fishing or camping.

The quality of the country air, the warmth of neighbors, and a proud countywide history found here are sometimes hard to find close enough to urban areas for convenience. However, Franklin County is conveniently located within one hour of Atlanta, 30 minutes from Greenville in South Carolina and three hours from Chattanooga Tennessee.

Education is a top priority, with choices galore from public to private to parochial. The choices don’t stop when the kids leave high school either, there are a variety of tertiary educational facilities in the nearby areas, especially Atlanta. Several colleges, and technical schools are just an hour away from Winder. Georgia Tech is one such institution. Other excellent higher education institutions within an hour drive time include Georgia State University, Emory University, Gainesville College and several more.

Franklin County is undergoing a population explosion, and for good reason — it is an ideal place to raise a family, still travel conveniently to work, but enjoy rural peace on the edge of a state park.
