Historical Significance: The City of Locust Grove derived its name from a beautiful grove of locust trees that could be seen throughout the town. This tranquil Henry County community is a place for combining tradition with change. Locust Grove was a major rail distribution center for cotton, peaches, and other farm products. The city had three cotton gins and several warehouses. In 1870, the first store was built on Main Street. Education: Locust Grove maintains that their youth are the future and the schools serving the community help shape that future everyday. Locust Grove has an adopted a very progressive and forward-thinking school system. Most recently, the county took a major step forward by becoming the first county in Metro Atlanta to adopt an adjusted school calendar for 2002-2003. The calendar provides one-week breaks in September, November, February, and April, in addition to the traditional two-week winter break, and Labor Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday, President's Day, and Memorial Day holidays. The Locust Grove Elementary School is located within the city limits. The school has a current enrollment of about 800 students and provides instruction for Kindergarten through 5th Grade. The school lives up to its motto of "Believe, Achieve, Succeed." Middle school students attend Luella Middle School located outside the city limits. This is one of the newest schools in the county, opening on August 14, 2000, to an enrollment of 980 students. Luella Middle School is located on land, which was once part of the antebellum Weems Plantation and is named for the old Luella School, which operated in the nearby town bearing the same name in the early 20th century until it was consolidated with Locust Grove in 1929. Henry County High School, located in McDonough, will continue to serve the High School age students until the Luella High School is completed in May 2003. Henry County High School has earned a number of awards for excellence including having a number of students selected to attend the Governor's Honors Program and having the Navy Junior ROTC (NJROTC) program designated a "National Honor School", placing it in the top 20 percent of the nation's programs. In 2001, the NJROTC rifle team was ranked first in the nation. The school offers students a sound Advanced Placement program, special honors courses, and a comprehensive vocational education program. All of the schools have active partners in education from throughout the community acting in unison with the school system to ensure a bright future for Locust Grove for many years to come.
