Milledgeville, Georgia

Population: 18,757
Located in Baldwin County

The fourth capital of Georgia, Milledgeville, was named for John Milledge, Governor of Georgia. Situated on the fall line of the Oconee River, Milledgeville was chosen because of its central location and ample springs.

The town plan drew its inspiration from Savannah, GA and Washington, D.C. and included four public squares with streets laid out in checkerboard fashion.

The State House Square, located on the highest point overlooking the river, was chosen for the Capitol Building. The Old Capitol is considered the first example of Gothic Greek Revival architecture in a public building in the United States. It served as the seat of government for the state of Georgia from 1803 to 1868 and in its legislative chambers the Secession Convention was held in 1861.

Since 1879, Georgia Military College, a preparatory school and two year junior college, has occupied the historic site. The building underwent a $10 million renovation in 2000. The building is open for touring through the Convention & Visitors Bureau trolley tour.
Georgia's Antebellum Capitol Museum is located on the ground floor of this historic building.
