Norcross, Georgia

Population: 10,111
Located in Gwinnett County

Norcross was founded in 1866 by John Thrasher. Thrasher named the town after his good friend Jonathan Norcross, the fourth mayor of Atlanta. Thrasher himself had been an early settler of Whitehall, but left in 1842. The site of Whitehall is now in downtown Atlanta, just southwest of the city center. The original settlers in the Norcross area lived in Pinckneyville, two miles north of Norcross, at the crossroads of Peachtree and Medlock Bridge. They later abandoned their settlement and joined Thrasher in Norcross when the railroad was built in 1870. As the first train stop going northeast out of Atlanta towards Washington, D.C., it became a resort town for the Atlanta elite. Made more attractive by its slightly cooler temperatures due to the higher elevation, vacation homes were built in what is now Historic Norcross. As the town quickly grew, its charming central business district was soon surrounded by traditional Southern homes. In the 1980s, when the Atlanta area boomed, Norcross shared in the prosperity. The population of the small area swelled from 3,500 to 6,000. Yet through the boom times, the Mayor and City Council sought to preserve the city's charm. It has been said that those who live in Norcross have the best of both worlds, as it maintains a quiet, picturesque downtown district while along its fringes are corporations doing millions of dollars of business on a daily basis. All sections of the city are connected to the downtown core by a network of sidewalks. At any time of the day, you will find walkers and joggers, mothers and fathers strolling with their small children, and even older citizens utilizing this community asset. The sidewalk network leads to or through our parks: Thrasher, Rossie Brundage, Lions Club, and Betty Mauldin. These amenities lend a restful, unique flavor to the city by providing a relaxed atmosphere for family and community outings.
